Question

My electrician put in Halo H745ICAT recessed downlighting.

Sent to Electrical Experts May 06 6:55 p.m.

My electrician put in Halo H745ICAT recessed downlighting. Halo does not make a Antique Bronze trim kit for this light. These cans are for a cabin we are building using tongue and groove siding. I want my electrician to put in different cans so I can use the colored trim kit I want. The tongue and groove isn't up yet but the drywall is done. How difficult will this be?

If the can lights are already installed, then he obviously installed the wiring to them before the drywall went up. That's good. You need to find out if the trims you want to use can be used with remodel type can lights. If they can, then that is the type of cans he will want to use to replace the new construction cans he already installed. It shouldn't be very difficult to do. It could be moderately difficult to remove the existing cans from below the drywall, but if there is access above the drywall, he can remove them from above and replace with new construction or remodel type cans. Also, your electrician should be aware of the IC (insulation contact) rating necessary for can lights that will come into contact with insulation. If the can lights will touch insulation, this rating is an absolute must.

Is there anyway to look at the Halo H745ICAT spec sizes and look at other brands of ballfles and trims that will work with these recessed cans. Is there really all that much difference? The electrician cannot go above the drywall since they are very high valted ceilings.

Also, have you every painted the baffles and trims? If so, do you recommend doing it on plastic or metal trims if at all? Does this work at all? Would I need a special paint? I really don't want to paint them.

I just don't want the black or white colored baffle and trim.
Thank you for your time and assistance in this matter.

I have never painted baffles or trims on a can light, so I couldn't recommend for or against it. I don't have access to a Halo catalog at home, but you may be able to research it on the Internet at Halo's website. Is your electrician working with you on this issue? Is the drywaller willing to remove and reinstall drywall in order for him to install different fixtures? You may be able to find trims you like that will work with the fixtures he used. It may require a little adapting, but it could probably be done without too much trouble. The electrician will probably have a hard time returning the cans since they have been installed. Please let me know if I can be of any more assistance.
